A Brief History of the Coptic Church

The Coptic Church was established in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by St. Mark the Evangelist in the city of Alexandria, Egypt around 43 A.D. With its rich history and profound traditions that are deeply rooted in the Christian faith. The Coptic Church has served for two millennials as a beacon of light that brings the teachings of Christ to the rest of the world.
To name but a few examples of her contributions to Christianity, the Coptic Church has brought to the world the first Christian Theological School in Alexandria. Saint Anthony introduced the world to the first Christian Monastic movement in the desert of Egypt. Saint Athanasius The Apostolic, the 20th Coptic Pope, defended the Doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ’s Divinity at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. He gave the world the Nicaean Creed and became known as the “Father of Orthodoxy”.
In spite of centuries of persecution, the Coptic faith has flourished in Egypt and throughout the world. Today, we have over 290 Churches in the United States alone and new parishes are being formed on a regular basis.
